Robert Downey Jr. Took His Furniture With Him to Film ‘Captain America: Civil War’

Gambar
Robert Downey Jr. is best known for his performance as billionaire inventor Tony Stark aka Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He played the character in 2008's Iron Man, the first installment in what would become one of the most popular (and profitable) movie franchises ever. The actor bid farewell to the role when Avengers: Endgame hit theaters in 2019.  He walked away with a $75 million paycheck but fans still wonder if Downey Jr. will ever return to the MCU. While Marvel Studios continues to make superhero movies, we're taking a look back at the 55-year-old actor's time in the MCU. Specifically, the period Downey Jr. spent filming Captain America: Civil War.  'Captain America: Civil War' premiered in 2016 Captain America actor Chris Evans and Downey Jr. teamed up in Captain America: Civil War. While the actors are good friends in real life, their characters go head-to-head in the movie. Hitting theaters in May 2016, Capt...

Kennedy: Furniture making an unintended consequence of COVID-19 cocooning

Gambar
I've always been fascinated by the so-called law of unintended consequences. Often applied to economics, it's the principle that when a solution is put in place to solve Circumstance A, it can inadvertently cause Circumstance B. A good example of this is the current situation involving unemployment benefits in the United States. As part of a federal pandemic relief package, laid-off workers can receive their normal state unemployment benefits plus a $600-a-week bonus. There's no doubt that this is helping millions of Americans weather the highest unemployment rate since the Great Depression. The unintended consequence is that many workers are drawing more in unemployment pay than they made on their jobs, creating a short-term disincentive to return to work. I'll let others weigh in on the "right and wrong" of this. I offer it only as a good example of an unintended consequence. Everywhere you look during this time of...

Rattan Furniture is Having a Moment and We Are All About It

Gambar
Texture is in, and we couldn't be happier. Woven into seatbacks, headboards, pendants, and everything in between, rattan is making its way indoors in ways that would make the Golden Girls gleam. This reinvigorated enthusiasm is even more proof that the grandmillennial style isn't going anywhere, but unlike grandma's screened-in porch, these designs are like a walk down memory lane meets modern style. Fresh forms, colors, curves, and patterns fill product lines at affordable shops, like Target and World Market, and luxury retailers alike. Even our favorite fashion stores with furniture lines, like Anthropologie, have joined in on the trend. But just because rattan is reinventing itself doesn't mean it's only meant for today's sleek and modern spaces. Pairing a woven piece with the right complementary elements can actually establish a timeless tone while adding a laid-back air that can suit any style–coastal, shabby-chic, modern…you name it. If this comeback style...

This eco-friendly furniture company sees boost as many invest in backyards amid lockdown

Gambar
Many summer products are backordered or unavailable as the coronavirus lockdown has people spending more money on their homes and their backyards. "The first two weeks in May, we saw more website traffic than we did in all of 2019," said Yardbird co-founder Jay Dillon. The company is busier than ever. They've had three times the business in May and three new stores. They're not your "average" company. They work directly with people and directly with factories. "We think we have the highest quality in the industry," Dillon said. "By not working with sourcing and design companies, our prices are 30-40 percent less than our competitors." But to understand what they are today, we have to rewind and explain what happened about six years ago when Dillon and his wife, Rachael, went looking for patio furniture. "It was expensive," he recalled. "We couldn't afford it and we started doing research and it took us to Asia, where ...

Vidivixi turns "messy artist's studio" into Mexico City furniture showroom

Gambar
Design studio Vidivixi has teamed its furniture collection with works by US artists and designers to create a series of moody sets in its Mexico City showroom. Vidivixi, which is led by British designer Adam Caplowe and American designer Mark Grattan, transformed a "messy artist's studio" in the Colonia San Rafael neighbourhood to create its first showroom. Grattan acted as a "matchmaker" to find suitable designs that would complement the studio's furniture collection, which it describes as a "reflection on warm voluminous forms and bold graphic contours". Furniture from the 2020 collection is used to form different home-like setups across the showroom with complementary designs and artworks. For example, an abstract painting by Atlanta artist Kristen Giorgi picks up the shapes and hues of Vidivixi's pale leather, tubular Club Chair placed in front. Two versions of the sofa are arranged around the Cafe Con Leche, a table with an American walnut...
